Let’s be honest: books where a main character is suffering from a disease aren’t easy and you’ve to be in a good mindset to endure it. I knew what I was heading into when I started this book but I wasn’t prepared how much Garrett Leigh blew me away.

This author has a unique writing who is able to let you endure the heavy situation the character’s have to live with. She isn’t writing these books that people pity her characters; Garrett Leigh shows the reader the lives of pretty normal people, shows how it is to live your daily life with a disease, sickness, mental illness or with an addiction. Her topics are wide and often a reason for people to say: “I can’t anymore. Let me go!” but in her stories there are silver linings. There isn’t a magic cure, there isn’t a panacea, a cure-all recipe. But with accepting the situation you are in and with help and support from people around you, she shows that the character’s lives are worth to live. All lives are.

Saying this as a kind of preface this book was a great journey and we were granted an insight in the life of Sergeant Jed Cooper.

Jed’s situation isn’t pleasurable when he is forced to live under the roof with his estranged brother- who is loaded with load of off problems the reader gets to know while reading – and the tight, unpleasant living situation doesn’t help for his recovery. It’s Max’ cabin where he finds solitude and an equally trouble soul he can connect with. Both guys, their chemistry and what they can do for each other is growing in the book but old habits die hard and Jed is having hard times to let loose.

I was really fascinated how Max was displayed through the book and although he’s calm and tranquil there’s a certain saddness he’s carrying – the reason for this is explained within the book. His epilepsy isn’t making his daily life easy and he has to relate to his dog to get his medicine and help when it’s needed.

Garrett Leigh wrote another book which is in ways sweet and has its funny parts but in the most parts it shows the struggles of people who all have their own problems – and it’s not limited to the main characters.

5 out of 5 stars for this book and highly recommended but be aware of the book’s topics for your own well-being.

Blurb

The diagnosis of a chronic stomach condition leaves thirty-two-year-old Sergeant Jed Cooper with little choice but to call time on his Army career. Then on the dusty streets of Kirkuk, an ambush gone tragically wrong decimates his team, and he returns to the US with a shattered leg and the memory of his best friend dying in his arms.

Life in his sleepy hometown proves intolerable until he finds solace in a lakeside cabin with vivacious young carpenter, Max O’Dair. In the shadow of the epilepsy that periodically plagues Max, he and Jed form an unspoken bond. After a late night episode, Jed realizes how much Max means to him, and life has taught him not to waste time.

But the lines between contentment and complacency are blurred. Things left hidden resurface to tear through their world, and before they can repair the damage, death comes to call again. Faces, past and present, rally around them to weather the storm, but before long, they are left with only love.
