Lord of a Thousand Steps by Tara Lain

To architecture student Ian Carney, family means everything. Taken in by his brother, Jim, when his father threw him out at eighteen for being gay, Ian yearns to create his own family with his boyfriend, Rico. But Rico’s in Mexico caring for a sick father, Ian hasn’t had sex in a month and a half, and his gorgeous boss, Braden Lord, CEO of the architectural firm Ian interns for, is looking better and better.
Braden’s life is chaos. Just out of the closet and going through an ugly divorce from his wife of fifteen years who’s trying to take custody of his two children, he desperately resolves not to succumb to a completely inappropriate attraction to Ian—even though his kids adore both the man and his crazy cat.
When Rico proves to be a snake in the grass and Ian exercises his powers of seduction, what starts as a “friends with benefits” fling turns into real life real fast. Can Ian give up his romantic dreams for an “old guy” who didn’t come out until he carried a mountain of baggage? It’ll only take a thousand steps.
Actualy since Ian made his appearance in the second book in the Love in Laguna series – Knave of Broken Hearts – I was excited to read his story. Ian is the younger brother of Jim, and the time is set four years in the future where Ian isn’t the 18yo abandonned guy, in need of a place to live.
Ian is having an intership in a really respectable architecture firm and his boss, Braden, is hot as hell. Not that this would be any helpful to show the staff that he is reliable.
But not only Ian is captured. Braden is fascinated by the younger man’s wit, his knowledge. But he isn’t really fitting in his live, with having a divorce on the plate, two kids he fights the custody for and being almost as old enough to be his father.
But emotions aren’t going with what is maybe rational.
Tara Lain knows how to build a solid story with an interesting topic. You are cheering along with Ian and Braden. Ian isn’t just a young trainee, he already went through a lot with his young age. Being abandonned by his father, in danger to left to live on the streets without the help of his older brother and now living with him, Jims’ fiancée Ken (we know them from the second book) and the curious cat, Ian rescued the same day he lost his home.
What I really loved about the book was the connection to the other books, but still if you want to read it as a standalone you are totally capable to understand everything. Details are revealed, but explained well. With Braden’s children Marielle and Jo-Jo (short for Joseph), there is a component mixed which is new but really refreshing and the way Ian is dealing with the kids is amazing.
I really loved also the complexity due Ian’s relationship to his boyfriend Rico, who is leaving him for taking care of his sick father in Mexico, and Braden’s problems on the divorce front, with his bitchy wife (it’s a bit stereotypically in the way she is displayed but you shouldn’t have sympathy for her) and his conflict of being older, and on top Ian’s boss.

Dem Architekturstudenten Ian Carney bedeutet Familie alles. Nachdem er mit achtzehn wegen seiner Homosexualität von seinem Vater vor die Tür gesetzt wurde, sehnt er sich danach, mit seinem Partner Rico eine eigene Familie zu gründen. Doch Rico muss nach Mexico, um sich um seinen kranken Vater zu kümmern, und dann ist da auch noch Ians umwerfender Chef Braden, der mit seinen beiden Kindern eine ganz eigene Anziehungskraft auf Ian ausübt. Als sich herausstellt, dass Rico gar nicht so viel an Familie liegt wie gedacht, findet Ian in Braden eine Schulter zum Anlehnen. Und vielleicht noch mehr?
Tatsächlich war gleich, nachdem Ian seinen Auftritt in dem zweiten Buch der Love in Laguna-Reihe – Knappe der gebrochenen Herzen – mein Interesse geweckt, seine Story zu lesen. Ian ist der jüngere Bruder von Jim, und das buch spielt vier Jahre in der Zukunft, in der Ian nicht mehr der achzehnjährige, von Zuhause rausgeschmissene Junge ist, der einen Platz zum wohnen sucht.
Ian absolviert ein Praktikum in einer respektablen Firma und sein Boss Braden ist extrem heiß. Nicht unbedingt hilfreich, wenn man der Belegschaft zeigen will, dass man zuverlässig ist.
Aber nicht nur Ian ist von seinem Boss verzaubert. Auch Braden kann sich Ians Witz, Humor, und seinem (intuitiven) Wissen nicht entziehen. Aber Ian passt nicht in sein Leben – Braden hat eine Scheidung auf seiner Agenda, zwei Kinder, für die er das Sorgerecht erkämpft und ist fast alt genug, um Ians Vater zu sein. Aber Gefühle scheren sich nicht darum, ob sie rational oder nicht sind.
Tara Lain weiß, wie sie eine solide Story aufbaut mit einer interessanten Thematik. Man jubelt mit Ian und Braden mit. Ian ist ein junger Praktikant, der eine Menge im seinem kurzen Leben mitgemacht hat. Von seinem Vater von Zuhause verstoßen, ist er in Gefahr, auf der Straße zu Leben, wäre da nicht sein ältere Bruder. Mit seiner Hilfe hat er eine Bleibe über dem Kopf und lebt mit seinem Bruder, Jims Verlobten Ken (die wir aus dem zweiten Buch kennen) und seiner neugierigen Katze, die er am selben Tag gerettet hat, unter einem Dach.
Was ich extrem an dem Buch gemocht habe war die Verknüpfung zu den anderen Büchern. Will man aber das Buch als eigenständiges Werk lesen ist das absolut machbar, da man alles versteht. Details werden verraten, aber gut erklärt. Mit Bradens Kindern Marielle und Jo-Jo (kurz für Joseph) ist eine Komponente miteingebaut, die neu aber erfrischend ist. Die Art und Weise wie Ian mit den Kindern umgeht ist beindruckend und rührend zugleich.
Ich habe zudem die Komplexität in der Beziehung zwischen Ian und seinem festen Freund Rico gemocht, der Ian verlassen hat, um nach seinem kranken Vater in Mexiko zu schauen. Mit Bradens Problemen an der Scheidungsfront, seiner Furie an Ehefrau (sie ist ein wenig stereotyp dargestellt, aber man soll auch kein Mitgefühl für sie empfinden) und seinem Konflikt, älter und darüber hinaus Ians Vorgesetzer zu sein, wird das Probemkarussell perfekt.
5 out of 5 stars for this really capturing book. The way how Ian and Braden interact and what maturity Ian is sometimes showing makes the book really pleasurable and entertaining.
