The review is written bilingual, in Englisch and German. It’s for my international reader as well as the German reader since here I will present sometimes German exclusive titles, some are translations from english titles.

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish

Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in—not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel’s relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he’s a city boy through and through, and it’s clear that this small town is one more place he won’t fit in.
Rex Vale clings to routine to keep loneliness at bay: honing his muscular body, perfecting his recipes, and making custom furniture. Rex has lived in Holiday for years, but his shyness and imposing size have kept him from connecting with people.
When the two men meet, their chemistry is explosive, but Rex fears Daniel will be another in a long line of people to leave him, and Daniel has learned that letting anyone in can be a fatal weakness. Just as they begin to break down the walls keeping them apart, Daniel is called home to Philadelphia, where he discovers a secret that changes the way he understands everything.
The book starts very on point and we are right into the story about Daniel, the tattoed teacher who is accepting the job offer in the middle of nowhere, in the Northeast of Michigan. His arrival at Holiday doesn’t seem so vacation-like as it might be, when he injured a dog on his way to his new place to live. In the woods, searching for help he meets Rex… and soon the sparks are flying and both guys have a one night stand…
The story is partly very fast with showing Daniel and Rex in hot sex scenes against woods but then on the other hand it has a structured timeline where we follow Daniel’s POV. Although it could be limited in the character revealings we get a lot of information about Rex also, we explore him along with Daniel.
It soon is revealed that the two guys are connected to each other and the burly, big lumberjack looking Rex is a kind soul. Rex seems strong and like he would smash other people’s heads but he has a shy, timid and sweet attitude which not only melt Daniel’s heart several times.
The sex between them is nontheless anything than vanilla, though it’s not directly kinky – so, sorry guys if you expect any fancy bondage or BDSM playings – but hot as hell and wow, super emotional.
Daniel is struggeling with his family, with his father and brothers, his relationship to them and moving to a city in the middle of nowhere, where people know each and everybody isn’t the most funny thing Daniel imagined.
He soon realises though he find a place there, might in only because of Rex and their slow building but constant growing relationship.
It is really sweet, touching and sometimes hard to endure what shadows from the past are haunting Daniel but not only him. Rex is such a wonderful, hurt soul, vulnerable and you really want to hug the big bear like guy tight and never let go.
A perfect 5 out of 5 stars read, with a great way of storytelling in setting it in Daniel’s POV. I am really intrigued what information we get about Daniel’s brother Collin and how the relationship is maybe growing. We will see, I am really excited.
This book can be read as a standalone but if you are interested in new information you should keep reading. I bet we get enough information about Rex and Daniel in the other books of the series although they aren’t the mainfocus anymore.

Buch 1 in der Serie – Mitten im Irgendwo
Daniel Mulligan ist tätowiert, hart im Nehmen und besitzt eine scharfe Zunge. Seine Unsicherheit versteckt er hinter Sarkasmus. Daniel hat nie irgendwo dazugehört – nicht zu Hause in Philadelphia, bei seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern, die alle Automechaniker sind, nicht an der Uni, wo seine Klassenkameraden von den Ivy League Eliteuniversitäten auf ihn herabgesehen haben. Jetzt ist Daniel erleichtert, eine Stelle an einem kleinen College in Holiday, Nord-Michigan, bekommen zu haben. Er ist jedoch durch und durch ein Stadtmensch und es ist klar, dass diese kleine Stadt nur ein weiterer Ort ist, an dem er nicht dazugehören wird.
Rex Vale klammert sich an seine tägliche Arbeit, um so die Einsamkeit in Schach zu halten: er verpasst seinem muskulösen Körper den letzten Schliff, perfektioniert seine Rezepte und fertigt mageschreinerte Möbel an. Rex lebt schon seit mehreren Jahren in Holiday, doch seine Schüchternheit und eindrucksvolle Körpergröße haben ihn daran gehindert, mit den Menschen näher in Kontakt zu treten.
Als sich die beiden Männer begegnen, ist die Chemie zwischen ihnen explosiv. Rex fürchtet jedoch, Daniel könnte nur ein weiterer Mensch sein, der ihn verlassen wird und Daniel hat gelernt, dass jemandem zu vertrauen, eine fatale Schwäche bedeuten kann. Gerade als sie beginnen, die trennenden Mauern, die sie um sich errichtet haben, einzureien, muss Daniel nach Hause, nach Philadelphia. Dort entdeckt er ein Geheimnis, das alles, was er geglaubt hat, verändert.
Das Buch schmeißt einen direkt in die Story von Daniel, dem tattowierten Leher, der ein Jobangebot annimmt, mittem im Nirgendwo, im Nordosten von Michigan. Seine Ankunft in Holiday ist nicht so einladend, wie er es sich bei dem Namen gedacht hatte und endet damit, dass er einen Hund anfährt und verletzt auf seinem Weg zu seinem neuen Wohnort. In den Wäldern trifft er auf Rex … und schnell fliegen die Funken zwischen ihnen und es kommt zu einem One-Night Stand…
Die Story ist stellenweise sehr schnell erzählt, was die Sexszenen mit Daniel und Rex anbelangt, in denen sie es an Bäume gelehnt wild treiben, dann ist es auf der anderen Seite eine gut durchstruktierte Timeline, der man aus Daniels Erzählperspektive folgt. Obwohl es dadurch eingeschränkt sein könnte, was die Charakterentwicklung angeht, bekommt man auch viele Informationen über Rex, wir erleben die Geschehenisse mit Daniel zusammen.
Schnell wird deutlich, wie verbunden die beiden Männer miteinander sind, und es zeigt sich, dass der kräftige, große, wie ein Holzfäller aussehnde Rex eine treue Seele ist. Rex scheint stark und wie jemand, der in der Köpfer anderer einschlagen würde aber dahinter versteckt sich eine scheue, schüchterne und süße Haltung, die nicht nur Daniel dazu bringt, dahinzuschmelzen.
Der Sex zwischen den beiden ist nichtsdestotrotz keineswegs als seicht zu bezeichnen, es ist allerdings auch nicht unbedingt kinky – also, sorry Leute, wer irgendeine Form von Bondage oder anderen BDSM-Spielchen erwartet hat, wird hier enttäuscht – aber ist heiß und absout anregend und wow, auch sehr emotional.
Daniel hat mit seiner Famile, seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern zu kämpfen, mit der Beziehung zu ihnen und sein Umzug mitten ins Nirgendwo, wo jeder alles über den anderen weiß, ist nicht das, was sich Daniel unter Spaß vorgestellt hat.
Er erkennt trotzdem schnell, dass er dort einen Platz gefunden hat, und sei es nur wegen Rex und der sich langsam aber kontant aufbauenden und wachsenden Beziehung.
Es ist sehr süß, berührend und manchmal hart zu ertragen, welche Schatten der Vergangenheit Daniel verfolgen, aber nicht nur ihn allein. Rex ist eine so wundervolle, wenn auch verwundete Seele an Mensch und man möchte den großen Bären von Kerl ganz eng umarmen und nie wieder loslassen.

Ein perfektes, 5 von 5 Sterne-Buch, welches mit Daniels Erzählperspektive eine klasse Methode gefunden hat, die Story zu erzählen. Ich bin wirklich gespannt, welche informationen man noch über Daniels Bruder Collin bekommt und wie die Beziehung wachsen wird. Wir werden es sehen und ich bin sehr gespannt.
Das Buch kann als Einzelband gelesen werden, aber wenn man an den weiteren Werdegang der Figuren interessiert ist, sollte weiterlesen. Ich wette man bekommt genug Informationen über Rex und Daniel in den anderen Büchern der Reihe auch, wenn sie nicht mehr im Zentrum stehen.
