The Little Things by Jay Northcote

There are lots of things that brighten Joel’s life. His three-year-old daughter, Evie, is one. His close relationship with her mother, his best friend from university, is another. Joel’s boyfriend, Dan, adds spice to his child-free nights, and Joel is pretty happy with how things are.
Then one cold and rainy night, everything changes. Joel’s life is turned upside down when he becomes a full-time dad to Evie, and his previously carefree relationship with Dan cracks under the strain.
Meeting Liam, who acts as if getting hurt isn’t a foregone conclusion, shakes Joel to the core. Their attraction is mutual, and Liam makes no secret of how serious he is about Joel. But Joel is wary. He tells himself he’s keeping Liam at a distance for Evie’s sake, when really he’s protecting his own heart. Taking a chance on this new relationship with Liam may seem a small step—a little thing—but is it one Joel can take after losing so much already?
When you lost a daring person what do you do? Joel is in this situation. As a gay single father he is caring and loving his three-year old daughter Evie and his life is uneventful but happy.This happiness is crushed when he got the news of an accident.
This book by Jay Northcote isn’t the easiest for maybe some reader, I really loved it because of the slow tempo and the focus on Joel and Evie. We get to know that Joel is having a boyfriend who is younger than him. This aspect is important in the storyline and leads to troubles and problems.
Though Joel’s boyfriend isn’t the guy he ends with you don’t have heavy grundge against him, you see how young and different both guys are.
With this on display you see how Joel is in a relationship, where his focus lies.
When the accident happens and Joel is dealing with a lot of changes the dynamics of the relationship changes. And this is the part where the book changes and the impatient reader gets the action which is wanted.
I think the whole book is incredible mature, with all the devastating events in Joel’s life, his role as a father and his different expectations of a life together with a partner.
Liam is the guy he is waiting for and the growing relationship is really beautiful but even the best guy seems to scare Joel… but obstacles only let you grow.

Joels Leben könnte nicht besser sein: Er führt eine glückliche Beziehung mit Dan und mit der Mutter seiner über alles geliebten, dreijährigen Tochter verbindet ihn ein enges Verhältnis. Doch ein tragischer Unfall verändert alles. Als alleinerziehender Vater muss Joel nicht nur den Verlust einer guten Freundin verarbeiten, sondern auch einsehen, dass die Beziehung mit Dan dieser Belastung nicht standhält. Ausgerechnet in dieser dunklen Zeit lernt er Krankenpfleger Liam kennen. Sie fühlen sich einander sofort verbunden, aber Joel zögert. Kann er sich wirklich auf Liam einlassen, nachdem er bereits so viel verloren hat?
Was tut man, wenn man eine geliebte Person verliert? Joel ist genau in dieser Situation. Als schwuler, alleinlebender Vater kümmert sich er sich aufopfernd um seine dreijährige Tochter Evie und sein Leben ist ereignislos aber glücklich. Dieses Glück ist zerstört, als er die Nachricht des Unfalls bekommt.
Dieses Buch von Jay Northcote ist nicht das einfachste für den Leser, ich habe es geliebt aufgrund des langsamen Tempos und dem Fokus auf Joel und Evie zu Beginn. Man erfährt, dass Joel einen festen Freund hat, der jünger als er ist. Dieser Aspekt ist später für den Storyverlauf wichtig und führt zu Problemen.
Obwohl Joels fester Freund kein Typ ist, auf den man einen Hass entwickelt, ist es doch sehr deutlich wie jung er ist und wie unterschiedlich beide Männer sind. Mit diesen Aspekten zeigt sich, wie Joel in einer Beziehung agiert und wo sein Fokus liegt.
Als der Unfall passiert ist Joel mit einer Menge Dinge konfrontiert, welche die Dynamik ihrer Beziehung verändert. Und das ist der Moment in dem Buch, an dem es sich ändern und wo der ungeduldige Leser die Aspekte gezeigt bekommt, die er sehen will.
Ich empfinde das gesamte Buch als unglaublich erwachsen, mit all den verheerenden Situationen in Joels Leben, seiner Rolle als Vater und seinen unterschiedlichen Ansprüchen für ein gemeinsames Leben mit einem Partner.
Liam ist der Mann auf den Joel gewartet hat und die beginnende und wachsende Beziehung ist wunderschön, doch auch der tollste Typ und seine guten Absichten scheinen Joel in Teilen zu verschrecken. Aber Hindernisse sind da, damit man sie überwindet.
If you love father-daugther-stories and don’t mind slow growing relationships you will love this book. Jay Northcote combines sweet events with devastating situation, the fears of different men are displayed perfectly. 5 out of 5 stars for this mature book.
Wenn man Vater-Tochter-Geschichten liebt und sich langsam entwickelnde Beziehungen kein Problem sind, dann ist das Buch genau das Richtige. Jay Northcote kombiniert süße Momente mit verheerenden Situationen, die Ängste zweier verschiedener Männer sind wunderbar dargestellt. Dafür gibt es 5 von 5 Sternen für dieses unglaublich erwachsene Buch.
